FEBRUARY
17th INTERNATIONAL HAVANA´S BOOK FAIR
February 13th to 24th
The 17th International Havana’s Book Fair will be
held in our country having Galicia’s culture as a guest of
honour. Under the slogan: “Reading is Growing”, this edition
will be dedicated to National Literature Award Winners
Graziella Pogolotti and Antón Arufat. Considered as one of
the main cultural events in the country, this book fair has
the participation of all the institutions linked to the
printing world, as well as authors, editors, distributors,
book sellers, literary agents, multimedia producers,
journalists and other professionals in Cuba and abroad.
There is a wide program of activities which include
presentations of books, exhibits, lectures, round tables and
seminars. This event will take place in a very nice,
cultural and tourist spot in Havana: the Fortress of San
Carlos de la Cabaña, a charming place located across
Havana’s bay and very close to Old Havana, World Heritage.

24th INTERNATIONAL ‘JAZZ PLAZA’ FESTIVAL
February 14th to the 17th
A meeting place for important personalities and new talents
of Jazz music worldwide. With the presence of Maestro Chucho
Valdés, Grammy Award Winner in different occasions, who is
soul and heart of this event and the greatest symbol of
Cuban piano playing Jazz. He and Irakere band paved the way
for Cuban musicians in the conquering of the Grammy Award.
To this recognition, taken place in 1978; other important
prizes have followed Maestro Chucho Valdés. An important
tradition and international impact have been achieved in
Latin Jazz and Cuban Jazz where relevant Jazz personalities
and young players, cultivating this musical genre, show
their talent. Jazz bands, ensembles and soloists will play
during the Festival and master classes, colloquiums and
debates on this genre will also take place.

INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM “VIOLENCE AND COUNTER-VIOLENCE IN
THE CULTURE OF LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN WOMEN”
February 18th to 22nd
This edition of the Colloquium has been dedicated to the
researches about the violence of gender in culture, society
and collective construction of the counter-violence. The
program of this event calls for this Colloquium as a
continuation of formers editions. This time the Event will
discuss topics such as the conceptualization of gender
violence, the gender violence in the Latin American and
Caribbean history, and the collective construction of
counter violence: domestic tricks, legal appeals and their
representations. Master conferences and forums on the topics
of the colloquium, as well as readings, concerts and
exhibits by Cuban writers and artists will be held.

“PEPE
SANCHEZ” INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF TROVA SINGING
March

This
Festival promotes the meeting of different generations of
the most authentic expressions of trove singing. The event
also promotes old and new Cuban troubadours with traditional
styles of interpretation. The main objective of this
Festival is to favor a social and cultural environment where
Cuba’s cultural idiosyncrasy and identity could be
reaffirmed through trove expressions. Attending this
Festival will allow participants to take part in different
artistic performances in the venues, conferences and
workshops; and also to know first hand about the experiences
and feelings that are inside Santiago’s trove movement. Pepe
Sánchez (1856 – 1918) was the precursor and Maestro of
Santiago’s troubadours and at the same time, a mulatto that
loved to sing and who, under the influence of different
trends in the song movement, could achieve new musical
accords.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF BALLET ACADEMIES AND INTERNATIONAL
COMPETITION FOR BALLET STUDENTS
March 15th to 29th
A meeting to shop align=justify t and prospects of ballet in
Cuba, and also to exchange experiences on the Cuban
Methodology for the teaching of ballet through workshops,
conferences and master classes. Precursors of these meetings
are Fernando Alonso – who together with Alicia Alonso are
the founders of the Cuban School of Ballet in the 1950’s and
present Honorary Chairman of the Meetings and President of
the Jury - and Maitre Ramona de Saá, a renown Cuban ballet
teacher. Among the activities conceived for this meeting,
there will be workshops on historical and ballroom dances,
folkloric dances; make-up; master classes, lectures;
practical classes of the specialty (ballet, classical duet,
points, repertoire and physical training); artistic
performances by participating academies. The Cuban School of
Ballet invites young dancers to participate in the 10th
International Contest for Ballet Students to be held during
this event.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF DANCE IN URBAN LANDSCAPES “OLD

squares. “Old Havana, a City in Motion” is an event included
in the international circuit of Dancing Cities.

The first Biennial of Caribbean Contemporary Dance will

8th INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL “CORHABANA 2008”
April 23rd to 27th
A meeting of choral groups from different parts of the world
for singing and sharing musical and cultural experiences
with several of the main Cuban choirs.
This event allows the exchange among choirs with national
and international prestige. This festival of choral singing,
held every two years, offers the participating choirs the
possibility of performing in the main concert halls in
Havana such as the Roldan and García Caturla Halls at the
Amadeo Roldan Theatre, the San Francisco de Asís concert
hall, the former Paula Church, and Lecuona Concert Hall at
the Grand Theatre of Havana. Performances can also be
attended at some of the most prestigious Havana’s musical
academies. During the festival, workshops on performance and
staging of the Cuban and international choral repertoire
will be held. Choral conductors interested on the workshops
can participate.

“WEMILERE” FESTIVAL OF AFRICAN ROOTS

In the Village of Asunción de Guanabacoa – a place that
holds in its narrows streets a lot of history and centennial
folkloric traditions – very near downtown Havana, “Wemilere”,
a Festival of African roots is held. This Festival offers a
wide range of activities, from academic sessions including a
colloquium and teaching cultural meetings up to tours around
places of historic interest as well as a varied artistic
program. This edition of the Festival is dedicated to ECOGUA
(The Economic Community of Eastern African States).
Attending “Wemilere represents finding centennial folkloric

20th FESTIVAL “LA HUELLA DE ESPAÑA” (THE SPANISH
IMPRINT)
June 1st to 8th
This Festival suggests an approach to the roots that made up
our nationality by means of artistic expressions such as
dance, music, plastic arts, literature and cinema. Cuban and
Spanish participants will have the opportunity to show their
art, and at the same time, to come closer to a people that
recognizes itself in its traditions. There will be different
artistic expressions linked to the Spanish cultural heritage
and its symbiosis with other autochthonous elements. The
Festival will show a blending of rhythms, shades, ideas and
styles. On 2008 this event will be of great importance due
to the 20th Anniversary of “La Huella de España”
Festival; the 60th Anniversary of the foundation
of the National Ballet of Cuba; and the 21st
Edition of the International Ballet Festival of Havana.

A rural culture fiesta inspired in poet Juan Cristóbal
Nápoles Fajardo (El Cucalambé).
A Spanish-American Colloquium to discuss themes as the
décima (ten-line country verses) and the improvised verses
in national cultures of Spanish-American countries. Poets,
musicians, improvisers, artists, researchers and writers
will participate in the meeting. The Cucalambeana tradition
in the identity of peasant culture in Cuba is another theme
to be analysed in this event, which includes several
contests and a program of shows, fairs and traditional
games.
